Abstract sculptor John Chamberlain passes away

TRIBUTES have been paid to the abstract sculptor John Chamberlain who has passed away aged 84.

Mr. Chamberlain will be best remembered for his work with scrapped metal from cars. 

He began turning junked cars into works of art in the 1950s and went on to have examples of his work exhibited across the world.

Despite deteriorating health over the past year, Mr. Chamberlain had enjoyed something of a renaissance for his work. He had switched gallaries in New York where he had staged an exhibition of new works.

A retrospective of his work is planned for the Guggenheim Museum in February.

As well as works of sculpture, Mr. Chamberlain had in recent months produced what he called “pictures” — large scale panels featuring digitally altered images from his photographic collection.

As well as being among the first artists to use scrap metal from cars to produced works of sculpture, Mr. Chamberlain had, in the past, used foam rubber, paper bags and aluminum foil in his artworks.
