THE accoustics pioneer Amar Bose has passed away in the United States. He was 83.
As well as founding the Bose Corporation — famous for it audio products — Dr. Bose taught for many years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Born in Philadelphia in 1929, Dr. Bose, whose father had emigrated from India, had studied at MIT, obtaining a master’s degree and doctorate in electrical engineering.
He joined the staff at MIT in 1956 and remained a faculty member at the world-famous establishment until 2001. In 2011, Dr. Bose transferred the majority of stock in his company to MIT, ensuring that dividends from the corporation will be used to fund education and research.
It was his dissatisfaction with the sound from speakers which were available in the 1950s that led him to carry out extensive research in physical acoustics and psychoacoustics. The research resulted in a number of patents being granted which he utilized by founding the Bose Corporation in 1964.
In a statement the President of the Bose Corporation, Bob Maresca, paid tribute to the company’s founder. He said: “It is impossible to put into words what Dr. Bose meant to each of us and to Bose. He was more than our Chairman, he was our teacher —always encouraging us, always believing that we could do great things.”
Mr. Maresca continued: “Dr. Bose was an incredible mentor and inspiration to Bose employees around the world. Today, and every day forward, our hearts are with him and our work will honour him.”
Dr. Bose was a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
