TRIBUTES have been paid to the actor James Grout, who has passed away at the age of 84.
Mr. Grout had enjoyed a long career which spanned radio, television, stage and films.
For many television viewers he will be best remembered from the Morse series in which he played Chief Superintendent Strange, the boss of the erudite detective played by John Thaw.
He appeared in the popular series between 1987 and 2000. Playing police officers had given him many opportunities to display his great acting skills in a number of shows, including Dixon of Dock Green, Z Cars and Juliet Bravo.
Away from television, the RADA-trained actor was just at home on the stage. He had received a Tony Award nomination in 1965 for his performances on Broadway in the musical Half A Sixpence, in which played Harry Chitterlow.
Over the years he appeared in many West End productions, including Man and Superman with Peter O’Toole.
His work on radio was also extensive. He appeared in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings in the early 1980s, while in recent years he could be heard in Old Harry’s Game and as the headmaster in the series King Street Junior opposite Karl Howman.
His film credits included The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) and The Ruling Class (1972).
