THE actor Malcolm Tierney, who starred in such shows as Lovejoy and Brookside, has passed away at the age of 75.
During his long career, the Manchester-born actor had enjoyed success on stage and screen.
Early work included appearances on a range of TV shows, including Z Cars, The Sweeney and Poldark, while films one of his first roles was in Star Wars (1977).
His success in the theatre included a number of notable performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company during the Seventies.
But many fans will remember him for his work on television, especially in the role of Tommy McArdle in the soap Brookside and the roguish antiques dealer Charlie Gimbert in Lovejoy which ran between 1986 and 1993. Other credits included work on Doctor Who, The Bill, Dalziel and Pascoe and House of Cards.
His film work included Braveheart (1995), The Saint (1997) and Great Expectations (2012).
Mr. Tierney had continued to return to the stage regularly over the years with his recent work including an appearance in a production of The Seagull at the Southwark Playhouse in London in 2012.
Among the many tributes to Mr. Tierney was one from the Southwark Playhouse which described him as “a magnificant actor”.
