TRIBUTES have been paid to the actor Richard Morant who has passed away aged 66.
Mr. Morant came from a theatrical family and enjoyed a long career on both stage and screen.
His first screen appearance was made in Battle of Britain (1969), in which he played a young pilot.
Several small roles on TV were to follow before he got what was regarded as a real break when he was cast as the bounder Flashman in the BBC TV series Tom Brown’s Schooldays (1971).
Other TV credits included Poldark, Bergerac and A Dorothy L. Sayers Mystery series in which he played Lord Peter Wimsey’s manservant Bunter (see below).
In recent years he had made appearances in a number of TV series including Midsomer Murders and New Tricks.
His film credits included Mahler (1974) in which the director Ken Russell cast him as Alma Mahler’s lover, Max.
Mr. Morant had studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
During his time there he had shared a student let in Camden with a number of friends including Bruce Robinson who was said to have taken inspiration from his time living there to write what was to become the cult film Withnail and I.
