Actress Frances Bay passes away

TRIBUTES have been paid to the actress Frances Bay who has died aged 92.

Mrs. Bay, who enjoyed success in films, TV and the stage, was already middle aged before she was able to fully realise her dream of becoming an actress.

She had shelved her career plans to become a homemaker following her marriage to her childhood sweetheart.

But she returned to acting in the 1970s and appeared in her first film, Foul Play (1978), which starred Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn.

Among her other film credits was Happy Gilmore (1996) in which she played the grandmother of Adam Sandler’s character, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) in which she appeared as Mrs. Tremond (see above photograph).

Her television work included the Dukes of Hazzard and Happy Days, in which she played Fonzie’s grandmother. She will also be remembered as ‘marble rye lady’ in a memorable scene from the series Seinfield (see below).

Mrs. Bay was seriously injured in 2002 when she was struck by a car. As a result she had to have part of her right leg amputated, but she had overcome her disability and had returned to acting.
