THE actress Marcia Wallace, who worked on The Simpsons, has passed away at the age of 70.
Ms. Wallace was the voice of Bart Simpson’s grumpy fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Edna Krabappel.
She had been with the hit show since it began in 1990, winning an Emmy two years later for outstanding voice-over performance.
Her early career had been spent in New York working in off-Broadway shows before beginning to break into television with appearances in shows such as Bewitched and Columbo. It was 1972 before her big break came along when she landed the role of the lovelorn receptionist on The Bob Newhart Show (see below).
She remained in the role for seven years, moving on to make appearances in such shows as Murder, She Wrote, Magnum P.I. and Taxi. Her film credits included My Mum’s A Werewolf (1989), Teen Witch (1989) and Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go To College (1991).
Having survived breast cancer in the late 1990s, Ms. Wallace became a high profile advocate for awareness of the disease. She wrote about her experiences in her memoirs, Don’t Look Back, We’re Not Going That Way, which were published in 2004.
Tributes were led by the executive producer of The Simpsons, Al Jean. He said: “I was tremendously saddened to learn of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace. She was beloved by all at The Simpsons.”
