THE British-born actress Sarah Marshall has passed away in the United States. She was 80.
Ms. Marshall enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic, but will be particularly remembered for her many performances on Broadway. One of her early successes in New York was in the 1952 production of Jane, alongside her mother Edna Best.
She received a Tony Award nomination for best actress in 1962 for her role in Goodbye Charlie, before going on to win the New York Critics Award for The Ponder Heart. Other Broadway successes included Come Blow Your Horn, Dream Girl, The World of Suzie Wong and in Gore Vidal’s Visit to a Small Planet.
Her movie debut came in 1958 with a role in The Long, Hot Summer (see below) which starred Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Other film credits included Embassy (1973), Dave (1993) and Dangerous Minds (1995).
An appearance in a 1962 episode of the Twilight Zone brought her to the attention of television viewers. In the episode, Little Girl Lost (see below), Ms. Marshall played a mother whose daughter had disappeared.
Over the years, Ms. Marshall appeared in many top TV shows, including 77 Sunset Strip, Star Trek, The Fugitive and Ironside.
Ms. Marshall had been suffering from cancer and passed away in Los Angeles. She is survived by husband Carl Held and her son Timothy.
