Artist and sculptor Gerald Laing passes away

THE pop artist and sculptor Gerald Laing has passed away. He was 75.

Mr. Laing had been a soldier, having attended Sandhurst, before entering the art world in the 1960s. After studying at St. Martin’s School of Art in London he headed for New York and immersed himself in the pop art scene there becoming friends with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

He went on to divide his time between painting and sculpting.

Among his best known paintings are images of Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina. He also produced a series of works featuring the late singer Amy Winehouse (see below).

His sculptures feature at a number of locations across Britain, including The Glass Virgins in Edinburgh and the 27ft. high bronze work, featuring a rugby line, which is outside Twickenham Stadium.

Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Mr. Laing had been living on the Black Isle in Scotland where he rebuilt the 16th. Century Kinkell Castle.
