Ashes of Mount Everest hero to be scattered

The ashes of Sir Edmund Hillary, who conquered Mount Everest in 1953, are to be scattered on the summit of the mountain.

Sir Edmund died in 2008 in his native New Zealand. He was 88.

Some of the ashes have already been scattered in Auckland harbour, the rest were taken to a monastery in his beloved Nepal.

Now a Nepalese mountaineer has said he will scatter the ashes on the summit of the mountain.

Apa Sherpa is hoping to achieve a world-record 20th ascent of the mountain. He hopes to begin his latest expedition on April 6.

Apa met Sir Edmund a number of times and has said he will pray for him when he scatters the ashes at Mount Everest’s peak.
