BBC announcer of the 1950s passes away

The death has taken place of Mary Malcolm who became a household name in the 1950s as a presenter on BBC television. She was 92.

When she joined the corporation, Mary Malcolm was one of the first two women to be TV presenters with the organisation.

She had worked on radio during the war and had presented a forces’ favourites show among her many duties.

In the 1950s Mary Malcolm was expected to wear an evening gown when introducing programmes.

She left the BBC in 1956 to establish a film company. 

Mary Malcolm was married twice and is survived by two daughters and a stepdaughter.
