Body of British woman found in Haiti

The body of a British woman has been identified in Haiti. Ann Barnes had been working for the United Nations when the earthquake struck.

Ms. Barnes, who was 59, had been in the UN's headquarters in Port-au-Prince when it collapsed killing dozens of people.

Meanwhile donations raised to help the people of Haiti have topped £50m.

The money has been collected by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).

Brendan Gormley, the Chief Executive of DEC, praised what he called “a fantastic show of support from the public”.

He said the public’s generosity had enabled member agencies to work tirelessly during the last fortnight to deliver emergency supplies in the form of food, water and medical care.

It is feared that the death toll in Haiti could be over 200 thousand.

Mr. Gormley urged people to keep donating as the earthquake had affected millions of people and entire lives need to be rebuilt from the ruins.

There are several ways to make a donation: online, by telephone: 0370 60 60 900. donate over the counter at any post office or high street bank, or send a cheque made payable to: ‘DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal’ to PO Box 999, London EC3A 3AA.
