Bones found in Germany could be those of English Princess

Bones found at a German cathedral are thought to be those of a granddaughter of King Alfred the Great.

Scientists believe they are the remains of Queen Eadgyth, the daughter of King Edward the Elder. The Saxon princess married Otto I, Holy Roman Emporer, in 929.

She is believed to have died aged 36.

The remains were unearthed in Madgeburg Cathedral.

Scientific tests found that the remains were those of a person who had spent their early years in Wessex, which matched records of Eadgyth’s childhood and adolescence.

Researchers at the University of Bristol’s Department of Archaeology and the Institute of Anthropology at Mainz University carried out the tests.
