British man is among the dead in Haiti

A British man is among the dead in the Haiti earthquake disaster.

Frederick Wooldridge, who was 41, had been working for the U.N. in the country when the earthquake struck.

Mr. Wooldridge was from Kent.

Meanwhile as the international aid effort begins to gain momentum, the Disasters Emergency Committee has stepped up efforts to raise much needed donations from the public.

The DEC, which is made up of 13 agencies including the British Red Cross and Oxfam, has already raised £15m with its Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

DEC Chief Executive, Brendan Gormley, said aid is beginning to get through.

“We urge the public to continue to dig deep into their pockets so supplies can be sourced and delivered as swiftly as possible over the next few days and weeks,” said Mr. Gormley.

There are several ways to make a donation: online, by telephone: 0370 60 60 900. donate over the counter at any post office or high street bank, or send a cheque made payable to: ‘DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal’ to PO Box 999, London EC3A 3AA.
