A British woman is now known to be among the victims of the flash floods on the Portuguese island of Madeira which left at least 40 people dead.
The Foreign Office in London has confirmed that a Briton had died but would not give any other details. Several other people from the United Kingdom were treated for minor injuries.
Heavy rain resulted in mud and stones being swept down from the mountains into the capital Funchal and other towns.
Many of the victims are believed to have been trapped in cars which were swept along by the flood waters.
Officials say the death toll is at least 40 but there are fears this could rise.
Visitors were caught up in the flooding including a group from Northern Ireland.
Specialist units from the Portuguese army have been flown to the island to assist with the rescue efforts.
Portugal is expected to announce three days of mourning.
