Burial ground issue still unresolved

Burial ground issue still unresolved

It has emerged that the Catholic Church has still not gained possession of land in west Belfast where human remains have been buried.

The land, which is near Milltown Cemetery,  was sold to the Ulster Wildlife Trust in 2000. But it was then discovered that human remains, including those of babies, were buried there.

A campaign group, Relatives of the Milltown Babies, was set-up and had been pressing the Church to buy-back the land.

Several months ago it was announced that an agreement had been reached between the Church and the Trust. However, the sale has yet to be completed.

Relatives had hoped the land would be in the Church’s possession in time for the annual Cemetery Sunday which takes place this weekend.
