THE Funeral has taken place of little Oscar Knox who had inspired thousands of his supporters during his brave battle against cancer.
Hundreds of mourners attended what was described as a Mass of the Angels which was held in St. Bernard’s Church, Glengormley.
The Family had said everyone would be welcome to attend the Service and had encouraged mourners to wear bright colours, including all sports and team colours.
5-year-old Oscar passed away on Thursday at the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. He had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer just weeks after his third birthday. His battle against the disease had inspired his many thousands of supporters not only in Ireland but further afield.
A massive fundraising campaign, which included the involvement of leading figures from sport, was carried out with more than £600,000 being raised to help pay for specialist treatment in the United States. At one point he was given the all-clear, but the disease returned.
Oscar’s family had warned supporters in recent week’s that his condition was deteriorating. The sad news that the little boy had passed away was released by the family in a statement on Facebook: “Our beautiful, amazing and much loved Oscar James Knox gained his angel wings yesterday afternoon [May 8]. Sleep tight little man. We love you son much! Xxx.”
Instead of sending flowers, supporters have been asked to make donations to the N.I. Children’s Hospice and The Haematology Unit at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Donations can be made Online or c/o Charles Lynch, Funeral Director, 50 Castlefin Road, Castlederg BT81 7EE.
