Controversial magazine publisher passes away

The death has taken place of Bob Guccione who founded Penthouse magazine. He was 79.

Mr. Guccione had launched the adult magazine in the 1960s in competition to Playboy.

In 1984 his magazine published unauthorised photographs of Vanessa Williams who had become the first black Miss America.

The controversy resulted in Ms. Williams relinquishing her title but delivered a massive sales boost of six million copies for Mr. Guccione’s magazine.

During his time as publisher Penthouse is estimated to have earned over £2 billion.

However, Mr. Guccione squandered his fortune, which at one point was estimated at almost £300 million. In recent years he was said to have been living in what was described “modest means”.

Mr. Guccione had been suffering from lung cancer for several years.
