ONE of the longest serving stars of television’s Coronation Street, Betty Driver, has passed away. She was 91.
Ms. Driver had joined the cast of the soap in 1969 on a three-month contract and remained with the show for 42 years.
She played the character of barmaid Betty Williams.
Before joining the show, Ms. Driver had enjoyed a long career in radio, film and stage (see below).
She was appointed an M.B.E. in 1999.
Many tributes have been paid to the actress.
A spokesman for ITV said the star would be missed by everyone who knew her.
Julie Goodyear, who was in Coronation Street for 25 years, also paid tribute.
She said: “It was an honour and a privilege to work with Betty for 25 years. We laughed together, we cried together and never once had a cross word. She was a true icon and legend, and a very dear friend.”
Ms. Driver passed away in hospital where she had been confined for a number of weeks.
