England cricket legend Sir Alec Bedser has passed away. He was 91.
Sir Alec was one of the finest bowlers ever to play for England.
During his career he took 236 wickets in 51 Tests.
He had been the last man alive to have taken the wicket of Australian legend Sir Donald Bradman in a Test match. A feat which some people would say was because Bradman had been an ‘old man’. But Sir Alec took delight in pointing out that ‘The Don’ was in fact in his late 30s at the time and still a great player.
The pair were to keep in touch until Sir Donald passed away in 2001.
Sir Alec played for Surrey along side his twin brother Eric for many years. It was a highly successful time for Surrey who won seven consecutive County Championships between 1952 and 1958.
When he finally ended his test career, Sir Alec then served as an England selector for 23 years.
He was knighted in 1997.
