Death toll continues to rise in Chile

The death toll in earthquake-hit Chile is continuing to rise amid fears it is already over 700.

The main rescue efforts are concentrated in the city of Concepcion which suffered widespread damage in the quake which measured 8.8. in magnitude. Many people died in collapsed buildings.

The country's President, Michelle Bachelet, has appealed for outside help in dealing with the disaster.

"We face a catastrophe of such unthinkable magnitude that it will require a giant effort," said the President.

Specialist teams from a number of UK charities have already flown out.

Officials in the country say it is believed two million people were affected by the earthquake.

After the earthquake struck a Pacific-wide tsunami alert was issued. However, this has now been lifted. High waves were reported in a number of countries, including French Polynesia and Tahiti, but these caused few problems.

The Christian Aid organisation has already launched an appeal to help victims in Chile. Donations can be made online.
