Death toll in Haiti continues to rise

Officials in Haiti say the death toll caused by the earthquake could be as high as 150,000. So far 70,000 victims have been buried.

Mass graves are now being used to deal with the large number of victims.

Meanwhile more aid is now being distributed to survivors.

The fund raising effort is continuing. The Dean of Belfast, Dr. Houston McKelvey, has handed over £50,000 to Christian Aid to help the people of Haiti. The money was raised over the past few days at St. Anne’s Cathedral.

On a national level, the appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee has so far raised £38m.

DEC Chief Executive, Brendan Gormley, praised everyone who has contributed to the appeal. “ These generous donations are much appreciated and are vital to help save lives in Haiti”, said Mr. Gormley.

He added that although the problems of aid distribution are real, DEC member agencies are increasingly getting aid through to the people who need it most, even in the outlying areas.

There are several ways to make a donation: online, by telephone: 0370 60 60 900. donate over the counter at any post office or high street bank, or send a cheque made payable to: ‘DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal’ to PO Box 999, London EC3A 3AA.
