There appears to be a downward trend developing in the number of deaths occurring in Northern Ireland.
Over the first nine months of 2009, 309 fewer deaths were recorded in the Province compared with the same period in 2008.
However, there was a slight rise in the number of recorded deaths of children during this period in 2009. Up until the end of September last year, a total of 109 deaths of children were recorded. This was 23 more than the same period in the previous year.
The downward trend was reflected in the number of adult deaths over the first nine months of last year.
During the period 5,204 men died, while 5,632 woman passed away.
There were fewer deaths as a result of cancer 2,905 (2,997 in ’08), while during the nine-month period last year there were 113 fewer deaths as a result of heart disease.
The full statistics for deaths in 2009 are expected to be available later this month.
