Dramatic fall in road death figures in Northern Ireland

There has been a dramatic fall in the number of people being killed on the roads in Northern Ireland over the past year.

According to official figures there were 55 deaths on the roads since the beginning of the year.

This is fewer than half of the 115 fatalities last year and is the lowest number of fatalities since records began.

There has also been a 20% fall in the number of people being seriously injured in road accidents.

Environment minister Edwin Poots offered his sympathies to the families of all road victims but he also welcomed the fall in number of lives being lost.

He said: “it is difficult to take pleasure from this record low when 55 families were unexpectedly without their loved ones this Christmas.

“An overall reduction in road deaths is of small comfort to them and that is why there can be no let-up in our efforts to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”

Mr. Poots said his department had introduced a number of initiatives to improved road safety.

He again called on drivers not to drink and drive, to remain alert and to slow down.
