Famous painter and sculptor passes away

The painter and sculptor Breon O’Casey has passed away. He was 83.

The oldest son of the playwright Sean O’Casey, he originally worked in the artists’ colony of St. Ives but produced much of the work he will be remembered for after leaving the resort in Cornwall.

Mr. O’Casey won acclaim for his abstract paintings and bronze  sculptures.

However, making a living from his art was often difficult in the early years. While still in St. Ives he worked part-time at the local telephone exchange and also produced jewellery in collaboration with a friend.

Away from the studio he played a key role in reviving the activities of the Penwith Society of Artists after becoming vice-chairman in 1967.

But ten years later he withdrew from the society and moved from St. Ives to set-up a studio in the Cornish village of Paul where he was to produce much of his best known work.

He developed what has been referred to by critics as a vocabulary of geometric forms — producing paintings in which landscapes were represented by triangles, circles and geomatric forms.
