Famous ventriloquist passes away

The death has taken place of the ventriloquist Ray Alan who was famous for his work with the upper-class puppet Lord Charles.

Mr. Alan, who was 79, passed away at his home in Reigate, Surrey.

He had been in showbusiness since taking to the stage as a teenager with a ventriloquist act. 

Mr. Alan then developed the puppet character Lord Charles. His TV breakthrough came in the 1950s with an appearance on the The Good Old Days. He and Lord Charles went on make the most appearances on the show.

In recent years Mr. Alan had cut back on his appearances, spending some time as an entertainer on the QE2.

Many tributes have been paid to Mr. Alan.
