Film director Peter Yates passes away

The British film director Peter Yates has passed away. He was 81.

Among his best known films are Bullitt (1968) and Breaking Away (1980) for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Director. 

He had started his career as an assistant director on The Guns of Navarone (1961).

His first film as director was Summer Holiday (1963) which starred Cliff Richard.

Bullitt, which starred Steve McQueen, was his first film in the United States.

It featured the now famous car-chase sequence in which McQueen drove a Ford Mustang through the streets of San Fancisco.

Mr. Yates enjoyed success with a range of films including John and Mary (1969), The Deep (1977) and The Dresser (1983) for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Director.

Mr. Yates is survived by his wife Virginia Pope, a son and a daughter.
