Film producer Dino De Laurentiis passes away

The film producer Dino De Laurentis has died. He was 91.

Mr. De Laurentiis was behind such films as Serpico (1973) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).

He had established himself as a film producer in his native Italy following the
Second World War and among his first films was La Strada (1954), which was directed by Federico Fellini. The movie won an Oscar for the Best Foreign Language film.

He had a hit in 1968 with Barbarella which starred Jane Fonda.

By the end of the 60s Mr. De Laurentiis had moved to the United States and established his own studio operation which made a string of well received films including Death Wish (1974), Three Days of the Condor (1975) and John Wayne’s final western, The Shootist (1976).

In the 80s he backed such movies as Dune (1984) Halloween II (1981) and King Kong Lives (1986).

His film of The Silence of the Lambs went on to win the ‘grand slam’ of Academy Awards — one of only three films ever to do so.
