THE death has taken place of film producer Jake Eberts who was behind a number of top movies, including Chariots of Fire and Dances with Wolves. He was 71.
Mr. Eberts, who was a Canadian, had founded Goldcrest Films in the 1970s, a company which was to have a major influence in reviving the British film industry.
He played a key role in bringing the Oscar-winning Gandhi (1982) to the big screen, as well as backing a number of other productions, including Local Hero (1983), The Killing Fields (1984) and the British rock music film Absolute Beginners (1986).
But Mr. Eberts left Goldcrest in the late 1980s after a number of its investments had delivered disappointing returns at the box-office.
However, he was to bounce-back with a number of top movies. These included Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Dances with Wolves (1990), Chicken Run (2000) and Open Range (2003).
