Former Attorney General passes away

The death has taken place of Lord Lyell who was a former Attorney General. He was 71.

After serving as Solicitor General under Margaret Thatcher, the then Sir Nicholas Lyell became the Government’s senior law officer in 1992 under the premiership of John Major.

He was to remain in the post until 1997, becoming the longest continuously serving law officer for more than a century.

Lord Lyell was a successful Queen’s Counsel, specialising in commercial and public law.

He was elected to parliament in the Conservative landslide of 1979. He retired from the Commons in 2001.

Lord Lyell had been diagnosed with cancer in 1998. He is survived by his wife Susanna and his two sons and two daughters.
