Former Doctor Who actress passes away

Tributes have been paid to the actress Elisabeth Sladen who has died. She was 63.

Ms Sladen was best known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in the Doctor Who TV series.

She first appeared as the doctor’s assistant in 1973 when Jon Pertwee was in charge of the Tardis. She then stayed on when Tom Baker took over as the Doctor.

Ms Sladen then left the series in 1976.

Her time in the Tardis was to prove extremely popular with Doctor Who fans. She was voted one of the best assistants in several polls.

She reprised her role for an appearance opposite David Tennant’s Doctor Who in recent years before going on to appear in the spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures on Children’s TV which began in 2007.

Her other TV credits included Z Cars, Public Eye, Some Mothers Do ’Ave ’Em  and Special Branch.

The Liverpool-born actress had been battling cancer.
