THE former Liverpool and Everton footballer Gary Ablett has passed away. He was 46 and had been battling cancer.
Mr. Ablett was the only player to have won the FA Cup with both Merseyside clubs.
He had joined Liverpool as an apprentice in 1982 and was then put on loan to Derby and Hull in order to gain experience.
He made his debut for the senior squad in 1986, going on to make 147 appearances for the side.
Under manager Kenny Dalglish, Mr. Ablett had been a member of a dominant Liverpool team which won league titles in 1988 and 1990 and the FA Cup in 1989.
He was then sold to Everton in 1992 and went on to play in the side which won the FA Cup in 1995.
After Everton he moved to Birmingham where he made 124 appearances for the club before finishing-off his playing career with the Long Island Rough Riders in the United States.
Mr. Ablett went on to coach at the Everton youth academy for several years before working with the Liverpool reserve team.
He had a brief spell as manager of Stockport between 2009 and 2010.
Among the many people to pay tribute was former Liverpool team-mate Ian Rush.
He said: “The fact he played for both Liverpool and Everton says something about how good he was as a player.
“He summed up what Liverpool people are all about. He gave 100% to the team and my favourite memory of him was after the 1989 FA Cup final when he was so proud to have won something for the team”.
