Former sports broadcaster Bill McLaren dies

Bill McLaren, who was the BBC’s “voice of rugby”, has died. He was 86.

Mr. McLaren had worked for the Corporation from the early 1950s until his retirement in 2002.

During his long career the Scotsman was held in the highest regard by both the game’s top players and ordinary fans. His attention to detail, coupled with meticulous research, won him wide respect.

Among those to pay tribute was former England captain Bill Beaumont who said Bill McLaren had been “synonymous with what is good about the game”.

The Director of BBC Scotland, Ken MacQuarrie, said Mr. McLaren “was one of the true broadcasting greats”.
