Former TV cook and radio executive passes away

THE DEATH has taken place of Michael Bukht who was a former leading figure in the U.K.’s commercial radio industry but who was also known to millions of TV viewers as the ‘crafty cook’ Michael Barry. He was 69.

In his cookery life he was a presenter of the BBC’s Food and Drink show for 17 years, ending his involvement with the programme in 2001.

But he also managed to maintain a highly successful career in the commercial radio world. He became the first programme controller of London’s Capital Radio in the 1970s, helping to develop the station into one of the most successful in the country.

He went on to found Classic FM which was the country’s first national commercial radio station.

However, he decided to concentrate on his television work after developing an inner ear problem in the late 1990s which was attributed to stress

Mr. Bukht had begun his broadcasting career with the BBC. At one point he was producer on the Tonight programme when Alan Whicker was a presenter.

He was appointed O.B.E. in 1996.
