THE former US Ambassador to the UK, Charles H. Price, has passed away. He was 80.
Mr. Price, who had been a successful banker, was appointed by President Reagan in 1983 and during his five years as Ambassador to the Court of St. James he was able to play a part in early efforts to encourage talks between the British Government and the I.R.A.
During his time in office there were times when US policy resulted in anti-American sentiment being expressed in the UK, including the decision to use US bases in the country to launch air raids on Libya. But Mr. Price made great efforts to put over his country’s position and became a familiar figure on news and talks shows.
When Pan Am Flight 103 was brought down by a bomb over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988, Mr. Price was at the scene within hours. He was praised for the compassion he showed for Lockerbie residents.
After his diplomatic career ended, Mr. Price returned to his successful career in banking. He also held a number of high-profile directorships with companies including British Airways, Texaco and Hansen.
He was also involved in a number of philanthropic causes.
