Funeral is held of Armagh man Charlie Armstrong

The Funeral has taken place of Armagh man Charlie Armstrong who was one of the ‘disappeared’.

Mr. Armstrong had disappeared 29 years ago and his remains were only discovered in July in County Monaghan.

Mourners were told by Bishop Gerard Clifford that it was a “a day to welcome home one who was loved and respected in this community.”

Bishop Clifford added: “Today is a day of relief, a day to close a chapter in the lives of the Armstrong family.”

Mr. Armstrong disappeared after leaving home to go to church in 1981. It was always believed he had been killed by the IRA, possibly for resisting a bid to hijack his car.

In a statement the family had said they had longed for the day when they could bring Mr. Armstrong home and give him a Christian burial.

Mr. Armstrong was buried following Requiem Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Crossmaglen.
