Funeral is held of Banbridge councillor

The funeral has taken place of Wilfred McFadden who was a long serving member of Banbridge council.

Mr. McFadden, who was 73, was a popular DUP representative.

Councillor McFadden was first elected to in 1964. He then served the community for many years before taking a break from public office for several years. He returned to the council for the Knockiveagh electoral area which he represented until his death on Sunday (February 14). 

His distinguished service was recognised in 2005 when he was made an M.B.E. in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Councillor McFadden, who was a local estate agent and auctioneer, represented the council on a number of committees and organisations which covered a wide-range of acitivities including tourism, health and the arts.

He was twice elected as Chairman of the Council (1995-1996 & 1999-2000).

His death has left many fellow councillors and council employees shocked and saddened.

Councillor McFadden is survived by his wife Mary, son Stewart and daughters Brenda and Barbara.

His funeral took place on Tuesday (February 16).
