Funeral of UN man takes place in County Cavan

The funeral has taken place in County Cavan of Andrew Grene who was killed in the Haiti earthquake while working for the United Nations.

Mr. Grene, who was 44, died when the UN’s headquarters collapsed during the earthquake in which an estimated 200 thousand people also died. He had been working as the assistant to the head of the UN mission in Haiti.

The father of three was born in Chicago but lived in Belturbet in County Cavan as a child and had joint US and Irish citizenship. His wife, Jennifer, is from Northern Ireland. The family have been living in the United States.

Earlier this week the Irish Foreign Minister, Michael Martin, paid tribute to Mr. Grene saying Ireland and his family can be very proud of his work.

The Funeral Service was held in Annagh Church of Ireland in Belturbet. Burial took place in the adjoining Churchyard.
