Funeral takes place of Disappeared victim Gerry Evans

The Funeral has taken place of Disappeared victim Gerry Evans.

Hundreds of mourners attended th funeral of Mr. Evans whose remains were found in bogland at Carrickrobin in County Louth in October, following an extensive search. 

The Crossmaglen man was 24 when he disappeared in March 1979 while hitch-hiking near Castleblaney in County Monaghan.

The Funeral took on Saturday (December 4) in his home village of Crossmaglen.

Requiem Mass took place in St. Patrick’s Church. 

Cardinal Sean Brady told mourners: “Certain people took upon themselves to play God with regard to the life of Gerry Evans. They took upon themselves to be judge and jury, executioner and undertaker. What arrogance. What appalling wickedness”.

The Cardinal added: “He died because someone or some group decided to take to themselves the right to destroy his life.”

Mr. Evans was buried in the adjoining cemetery.

Members of he Evans family carried the coffin with his mother walking behind.
