Funeral takes place of rugby commentator

Funeral takes place of rugby commentator

Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of Bill McLaren who was known as ‘the voice of rugby’.

Mr. McLaren, who died last week aged 86, had worked as a commentator for the BBC for almost 50 years.

Mourners packed the 650-seat Teviot Church in Hawick for the Funeral Service. Outside, several hundred people followed the service on loudspeakers.

Among those attending the service were familiar faces from the world of rugby.

A lone piper played as Mr. McLaren’s coffin was carried into the church.

During the service his grandson, Gregor Lawson, spoke movingly of his grandfather, telling mourners that he was a man “with a sweet tooth, a quick tongue and a great love of his family”.

As the coffin was taken away from the church to its final resting place, a round of applause broke out from people in the local High Street.
