Funeral takes place of top businessman and engineer

The funeral has taken place of Fred Wilson, who was one of Northern Ireland’s most successful businessmen. He died on Monday aged 83.

The entrepreneur founded F. G. Wilson Engineering in 1966 and went on to build the company, which manufactured generators, into a world-class company. The firm was sold to the US company Caterpillar in 1999.

F.G Wilson remains the second largest manufacturing operation in Northern Ireland and employs over 2,000 people at it factories in Belfast, Monkstown and Larne.

Mr. Wilson retired from the company in 1999 but within a year he had started another firm to manufacture a range of golf buggies.

He received an O.B.E. in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list last year.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife and four children.

The Funeral Service took place in Hillsborough Presbyterian Church.
