Funeral takes place of top Northern Ireland photographer

The Funeral has taken place of one of Northern Ireland’s top photographers, John Harrison.

Mr. Harrison, who was 50, was well known within the press and public relations fields and is credited with recording key moments in recent Northern Ireland history.

His work covered the Troubles and the peace process. Several days before his death Mr. Harrison had been in Washington with politicians attending the economic conference.

He had begun his career with the Ballymena Guardian in the mid-1970s before moving to Belfast and joining the Pacemaker Press agency. He eventually established his own company.

Leading politicians were among those to pay tribute.

Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson said Mr. Harrison recorded “almost every seminal and important moment in Ulster’s History over the last 20 years”.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said the photographer was “quite simply a one-off in every way”.

He received an M.B.E. for his work.

Mr. Harrison is survived by his wife, Mandy, and children Peter, Thomas and Catherine.
