Funeral is held of newspaper founder

The funeral has taken place of Basil McLaughlin, who was one of the founders of Belfast newspaper The Andersonstown News.

Mr. McLaughlin died on Wednesday aged 76.

In 1972 Mr. McLaughlin along with three others set-up the newspaper. The money used to establish the publication came from the proceeds of the Republican protest song The Men Behind the Wire by Barleycorn.

He was soon editor of what was at first a community news sheet but went on to establish the publication as a fully-fledged newspaper which had the respect of many.

The company evolved into the Belfast Media Group which today owns the Irish-American newspaper Irish Echo.

Away from the demands of newspapers, Mr. McLaughlin was a keen golfer as well as a fan of jazz and films.

He is survived by his wife Patricia.

The Funeral took place on Saturday afternoon (January 30). View the Passedaway.com Notice for Mr. McLaughlin.
