Haiti holds a day of mourning

The first of three days of mourning has been held in Haiti to mark one month since the earthquake hit the country killing at least 230,000 people.

A remembrance service took place in the devastated capital, Port-au-Prince.

An estimated 1.2m people need emergency shelter. Aid agencies say a great deal has already been done to help people in the Caribbean country but much more remains to be achieved.

So far, £77m has been raised in the UK by the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal. The DEC consists of a number of agencies including Action Aid, Islamic Relief and Oxfam.

Brendan Gormley, Chief Executive of DEC, says the UK public can be proud of the emergency work they have already helped fund through the DEC. But he stressed the challenges remain enormous.

Mr. Gormley has urged the public to continue supporting the Appeal.
