A HEADSTONE has been unveiled at the grave in Belfast of a young man who is regarded as the first victim of the Titanic.
Samuel Scott had been just 15 when he fell to death while working on the ocean liner at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in 1910.
At the time the body of the young man was buried in Belfast City Cemetery in what became an unmarked grave.
His name was relatively unknown in the story surrounding the famous ship which shank on its maiden voyage to New York in 1912 with the death of over 1,500 people.
But in recent times, publications featuring information about the City Cemetery have made references to the grave’s existence.
There was also a children’s book by Nicola Pierce, Spirit of the Titanic, which has the ghost of Samuel as its narrator.
The initiative to erect a headstone at the grave of the young shipyard worker came about as a result the publications highlighting the little known story.
The headstone was erected following support from the West Belfast Festival.
