Hollywood star Hopper passes away

The Hollywood film star Denis Hopper has died. He was 72 and had been suffering from prostate cancer.

The star of Apocalypse Now and Easy Rider was diagnosed with the disease last September after complaining of suffering flu-like symptoms.

Mr. Hopper had enjoyed a long career in the film industry. He had won a role in the 1950s opposite James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause and had gone on to appear in over 100 movies over the years including Giant, Cool Hand Luke and Speed.

However he also enjoyed success as a director, producer and screenwriter. Away from films Mr. Hopper was also known as an accomplished photographer, painter and art collector.

He was nominated on two occasions for an Oscar ‑ for writing Easy Rider and his role in the 1986 film Hoosiers.

Many tributes have been paid to the actor. Amomg them from Easy Rider co-star Peter Fonda who said: "We rode the highways of America and changed the way movies were made in Hollywood. I was blessed by his passion and friendship".

Mr. Hopper was married five times and had four children. At the time of his death he was in the midst of what was reported to be a 'bitter divorce' from fifth wife Victoria Duffy.
