Human remains are found at a house in Belfast

The skeletal remains found at a house in South Belfast were those of a woman, experts have confirmed.

Police had sealed off the property in the Village area following the discovery.

The property, which had been vacant for some time, is in Donegall Avenue.

It is understood the discovery was made when contractors began clearing the property following complaints from residents in the area of a strong smell coming from the house in recent months.

A post-mortem examination has established the remains were those of a woman who had been dead for over a year.

The exact cause of death remains unclear, although the PSNI said there did not appear to be obvious signs of violence.

An investigation is to continue.
