Hundreds killed after earthquake hits China

An earthquake in Western China has killed hundreds of people and injured thousands.

The quake, which had a magnitude of 6.9, struck in the Qinghai province with the town of Jiegu, in Yushu county, suffering the worst of the devastation.

Officials say the death toll in the region is 600, but there are fears that this figure will rise.

The local airport is reported to be operational.

A Government spokesman said 5,000 specialist rescue workers have been despatched to the area from surrounding provinces.
