THE remains of King Richard III are to be reburied in Leicester after a ruling in the High Court.
Distant relatives of the King had gone to court in bid to win the right for the remains to be buried at York Minster. The Plantagenet Alliance, which includes 15 of Richard’s distant relatives, had been granted a judicial review of the decision by the Ministry of Justice to allow the burial at Leicester Cathedral.
The skeletal remains of the last of the Plantagenets, who was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, were discovered beneath a carpark in Leicester by archaeologists in 2012. The site had been where the Franciscan friary of Greyfriars had stood and where the King’s body had been taken following the battle.
The Plantagenet Alliance had argued in court that they should have been consulted over where the King’s remains should be reinterred. But three judges ruled there had been no duty to consult with the group.
The judges said they agreed that it was time “for Richard III to be given a dignified reburial, and finally laid to rest”.
Officials in Leicester welcomed the ruling. The £1m project to provide a tomb for the King will now proceed with a reinterment ceremony expected to take place in spring 2015.
