Killyleagh suffers second road death tragedy

The County Down village of Killyleagh has suffered a second road death tragedy in as many days.

The latest victim was an 18-year-old local woman who died when two cars collided on the Ballytrim Road between Crossgar and Killyleagh. The victim has been named as Megan Nash.

Three other people were injured in the collision which happened at around midnight on Friday.

The people of Killyleagh were already mourning the death of local resident John Pirie. He died along with two other people in an accident on the Killinghy Road near Comber during the early hours of Thursday.

Mr. Pirie's funeral took place on Sunday.

Following those deaths the PSNI’s Chief of Road Policing promised to introduce what were described as ‘radical new measures’ to cut the carnage on local roads.

Superintendent Muir Clark revealed that he plans to set-up a dedicated collision investigation unit which will specialise in ‘forensic examinations of how crashes happen’.
